Race this morning went well.  I'm always cautious to run my guts out on the 4th of july race because I don't want to be too dead to enjoy the rest of the day.  Felt like I ran a good hard race today though.  Ran fairly even splits on the miles that were flat, little slower on the uphill mile in the middle (5:43, 6:14, 5:45).  Hit the Kaysville parade afterward, BBQ and Grma & Grpa Brough, and the fireworks at Davis High.  Great day, girls had fun.

Dropped the girls off at my parents, and Lesley and I headed to Ben Lomond peak.  Parked at the trailhead in the North Ogden Divide.  Hiked most of the way up with some running here and there.  Ran a lot of the way back down.  Probably could have ran a bit more, but I've had a great week overall and didn't feel the need.  2.5 hrs to get to the peak, 1.5 hrs back down.  GPS watch was out of batteries and I forgot to charge it the night before, so we just went with the mileage on the trail markers.  Perfect day to be out in the mountains.  Not too hot, windy and rainy and great.  Good to get out for a solid hike/run with Lesley.

Race today went great.  Hit my goal of going under 1:20 finally.  Had to fight for it though.  Felt strong for most of the race, and kept wanting to go faster, but talked myself back down to reality each time.  I've had too many races that I go with how I feel for too long, and run out of gas with way too much distance left to cover!  Mile 11-12 was by far the test in this race.  Mostly downhill the whole way, with a slight uphill for that mile.  Great race, ran the first half with Janae R, and that was nice to have a running buddy to keep my mind occupied for a bit.  Solid race, with a solid PR today.  Hamstring held up well with the ace wrap, and thanks to the double rub out this week with Sariah, quads were a little sore the whole race, but nothing that held me back too much.  Now too get excited for the Huntsville marathon next month!!

Got my long run in today that I missed over the weekend during the rain storm!  Felt really strong for most of it, and feeling more and more prepared for the marathon coming up.  Gu'd up at mile 8 and 15, which was a lifesaver.  Didn't feel dead at those points, but I was definitely running low on the tank.  First 5 miles around south ogden, flat and nice, had to hold myself back so I didn't go too hard.  Met up with Jordan for mile 5-8 over passed Weber and to the pavilion on the pipe trail.  Kept heading on after that to Ogden Canyon on the trail and then down to Rainbow Gardens.  Hit the parkway trail for a couple miles before turning and heading back when I got to Loren Farr Park.  Really windy through the canyon that hurt my times a bit, but not really caring too much about time today anyway.  Back up to the pipe trail and back through Weber.  Ran up to Beus pond and did a few laps to up the mileage just a bit before heading back home.  Overall time was just over marathon goal finish time, so I'm hoping that I can squeeze in another 5k in the same amount of time come race day.  Hopefully it will be possible, especially with the downhill course.  Overall, great run, and glad I got the long run in!!

Well, Well.  The long awaited Huntsville Marathon!  Needless to say I didn't hit my goal of 2:50, but I gave it an honest effort.  Not tons of competition at this race today, I ended up leading the race with a high school buddy (Brad Phippen) for the first 5 miles.  We were then joined for the next couple miles by 3, 4 place.  We eventually let them go because we didn't want to run faster than planned pace.  2nd ended up drifting back to us, but 1st never did.  Ran with Brad through first 14 miles and felt great, and on perfect pace (well, slightly ahead of schedule by a minute or so).  Ran solo for the next 9 miles, and my legs slowly starting giving up on me.  Sad to realize that with 6-7miles to go that my legs weren't going to hold on to pace enough to hit my goal, and there was pretty much nothing I could do about it.  Ended up walking more than I would like to admit in the last 4 miles, and getting passed for the second place finish at about mile 23.  The pass also gave me a little kickstart, but I still struggled through the last 3 miles and managed to hold on to third.  Headed straight to the medical tent for a liter of saline to perk me up again.

Kind of embarrassing to post my splits but here they are

Splits (5:59, 6:15, 6:16, 6:21, 6:17, 6:23, 6:23, 6:28, 6:28, 6:25, 6:26, 6:29, 6:27)

Second Half (6:34, 6:28, 6:27, 6:46, 7:06, 7:07, 7:27, 7:20, 7:49, 8:50, 8:39, 9:02, 8:11)

So after failing to hit my goal, but being happy with a third place victory, they didn't call my name in the awards and ended up losing my time for some reason. They had to verify my finish with the video recording before awarding me with a trophy and medal. No cash/cash value prize for third overall, interesting. In summary. 10:00 am start time is way too late and hot for a marathon, I would rather run in snowy conditions for the first few miles. Course was harder than expected with rolling hills for the last half marathon after a bombing quad burner for the first half. Good to get another marathon under the belt after a two year break though. Can't complain too much cause it was an enjoyable day overall!

Nice race! Nothing embarrassing about a third place finish and a strong race. We all have bad days, but to still take third on a bad day is pretty sweet.

Nice job Cam. It was certainly hot today and I was thinking about all of you around noon when the sun was out and shining strongly.

Third place finish is awesome man. Don't worry about the fade at the end, alot of that likely has to do with the heat.

From AngieB on Sat, Sep 29, 2012 at 21:38:07 from 65.130.72.90

You finished great cam and pushed through it and i admire that and you conquered it. I was a little worried about ya when I came up to ya you were really pale I'm glad I saw ya and we helped each other through it.

Totally agree on the 10 am start! That would be ideal in November, but September in Utah? NO!

Great job coming back to the marathon and on third, glad you got that mess all figured out. Hate it when that happens.

Good to meet you today. Sorry I made you repeat your name a hundred times after just finishing:) battle well fought. You're right, the last 3 miles especially were winedy and rolling it seemed.

I totally agree with you on the 10 am start,I warned the race director but he didn't listen. I also thought it was a way to steep 1st half and a very difficult finish (I noticed driving in my friends car from 17 on). Glad you finished with 3rd:)

From Kam on Sun, Sep 30, 2012 at 14:46:47 from 71.219.15.115

Cam, it was a tough one. I was excited for the 10 a.m. start; usually I hate the horrible sleep the night before, and was pleased to have a normal morning routine. In hindsight, even 9:00 a.m. would have made a big difference. I think we wilted in the heat.

From Kam on Sun, Sep 30, 2012 at 16:13:14 from 71.219.15.121

wow!! seriously you rocked those first 20 miles--- that last 6 miles reminded me of TOU ending (I watched the video footage) but way more open fields for a warm ending!! Way to just get it done despite the fatigue!! hope you recover well!!

From Cam Harvey on Mon, Oct 01, 2012 at 13:44:33 from 65.130.132.145

Not sure Angie, I want another crack at a marathon so I've been thinking Ogden, but it seems so far away since I'm already in pretty good shape. Lesley will probably do the Ogden Half and won't do another marathon for awhile. You?

From AngieB on Tue, Oct 02, 2012 at 20:46:10 from 65.130.72.90

I'm running a half at the end of this month but not sure after that. I dont really get into the winter circuit like everyone else does I have a hard time committing to that many races. I may run UV next yr and I want to run st George marathon I thnk. If not I will run the hunstville full again next yr I need to get under 3 now or it's going to bug me forever. Hey do you still work in the ER? I don't see ya there anymore.

From Cam Harvey on Tue, Oct 02, 2012 at 21:31:50 from 65.130.132.145

Angie, I agree with you on the circuit, its hard to commit to so many races, I did it a few years back and haven't done it again. I also have a hard time supporting Striders now that I'm good friends with Ben VanBeekum. Im really considering trying to find a marathon in a few months, but I don't know if they exist in Utah, I might be out of luck until next spring. Marathons are just so hard cause you can train your guts out, but race day will do what it wants to with you and thats it for the year, where with 5k's you can have a bad race, but theres another one next week! I actually work in the ICU now, but float to the ER once in awhile. I didn't realize we worked so close!!

From Tara on Tue, Oct 02, 2012 at 21:37:11 from 75.169.138.231

I work in the ER too as a crisis worker when I'm not working in psych. I see Ben there all the time ( in the ER of course.) Now I'll be looking for Angi and Cam:)

From AngieB on Tue, Oct 02, 2012 at 21:38:29 from 65.130.72.90

Ya I agree I kind of wish there was a marathon here in December. I dont want this training to go out the window til nxt yr. A couple of my friends are running a CIM marathon in December but don't know any details about it. Ya I have worked at McKay for 13 years. I'm going to die at that place...literally haha. Ya I'm just down in rad.

From Kelli on Wed, Oct 03, 2012 at 06:56:35 from 67.172.235.55

You should all go to AZ and run a marathon this winter. You would have fun together and could swap hospital stories it sounds like!

Sore hamstring x5 months now.  Tried everything I can think of from KT tape, to sports massage, to wrapping it for runs/races.  Nothing has cured it yet.  Do I stop running until it can heal naturally, or do I just wrap it the rest of my life?

Nice walk with the fam to the corner and back home.
